Nature's Code
The title "natural perfumer" holds "natura" - nature - at its very heart. Nature is my muse and my guide. Like every sentient being, we are woven into a singular natural intelligence, attuned to and animated by a universal code.
By 'universal code,' I mean the intricate set of patterns, principles and relationships that govern the balance and rhythm of nature. This code shows itself in the cycles of growth, decay, and renewal, darkness and light and all the subtle hues between.
In my work as a natural perfumer, I seek to understand and channel this code, drawing from nature's order and harmony to compose fragrances that awaken and resonate with life's synchronicity and evolution, tapping into the perpetual revolution of creation.
My Palette
My palette comprises botanical treasures, cherished allies sourced from a myriad of plants, each with its own attributes forged through the complex compounds and trace chem-mystery that give each its unique signature. Each holds its own energetic gift, subtly informing my creative choices when creating a perfume.
For instance, when crafting a scent that uplifts and grounds, I might select luminous citrus notes like bergamot to embody vitality and fresh starts, balanced by the deep, earthy embrace of vetiver to evoke stability and transformation. In this way, the universal code becomes both muse and compass, guiding the mindful selection of materials to create harmonious fragrances that awaken ancient libraries of memory and experience.
Subtle Nauances
Lavender, with its enduring gentle floral aroma and soothing energy, conjures tranquillity that gently lifts the weight from the soul. The delicate citrus of bergamot or the golden warmth of sweet orange radiates a shared sense of hope; their bright, refreshing energy stirs joy and clarity.
Sandalwood, with its soft woody presence, brings steadiness and invites deeper reflection, anchoring stability and depth within a fragrance. Each of us engages in a unique dialogue with these essences, discovering new energetic facets that inspire us to craft scents designed to touch both soul and spirit.
Recognising these unique energetic gifts allows us to mindfully select botanicals that contribute specific qualities to the perfume's overall character. For me, each material holds a complexity, a blend of compounds that define its unique signature and possibilities, adding another layer of nuance informing my perfume's dynamics.
Understanding these nuances guides me in choosing and combining ingredients with intention. When we attune to a material's unique signature - its aroma, energetic presence, and how it reveals itself over time - we make more inspired choices about its place in a composition. This awareness empowers me to weave together ingredients that harmonise or play in contrast, creating a more layered and resonant result.
Learning to Receive
Traditional perfumery materials are divided into families by aroma and origin: citrus from peels, florals from flowers, leaves, spices, woods, resins, etc. However, to evolve a unique form of energetic perfumery, we will glean much of our understanding from the feedback each aroma provides through channelled meditation.
A typical channelled meditation session for perfumers might begin by finding a quiet, comfortable space and centring oneself with a few deep, mindful breaths. The receiver then focuses their attention on the aroma of a single botanical material, inhaling gently and allowing impressions, emotions, and sensations to arise without judgment.
As thoughts and responses surface, the receiver notes the energetic qualities, personal associations, and the subtle changes in perception over several minutes. The perfumer repeats this mindful process with new materials, sometimes combining them to observe how their energies interact. We then appreciate the subtle facets of each materia to evaluate their weight, accent and longevity.
A New Expression
Over the past year, I have been shaping a new path in natural perfumery, blending my training with insights from energetic and quantum exploration. I no longer see these precious gifts as simple tools, but as energetic allies, partners in a fragrant collaboration that opens the way to evolution and expanded consciousness. I have created a serious, comprehensive training for those who want to dive deeper into this aromatic world. The course will launch in Spring 2027 and will be taught online.
